FAQ – Frequently asked questions about textiles & finishes

If the material is permeable to water vapor from the inside out, it is breathable. The degree of air permeability is defined by the MVTR value (moisture vapor transmission rate). It indicates the amount of water that can evaporate through one square meter of fabric in 24 hours. The higher the content, the better the air permeability of the textile.
Shirts and blouses with “non-iron” finish are easy to care for and can be worn immediately after washing and drying. For this, remove the clothing with the residual moisture from the washing machine or dryer and let it steam out on a hanger.
The quality of a cotton depends, among other things, on the fiber length and is called “staple length”. The longer the fiber, the finer and more tear-resistant the cotton.
    Organic cotton
    .
Organic cotton is produced according to the guidelines of organic farming. Unlike conventional cotton farming, the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers is prohibited.
    Merino wool
    .
Merino wool is particularly fine, does not scratch, has a soft feel, a uniform stitch pattern and offers a pleasant wearing comfort. It can be washed mostly at 30 degrees.
    Organic Cotton
    .
Maintaining healthy soils, ecosystems and human health by using natural farming practices instead of toxic chemicals and GMOs (genetically modified organisms), organic cotton has several proven benefits: Reduces environmental footprint, relieves pressure on local water resources, promotes safer work and better health for farmers, and promotes socioeconomic sustainability.
    Pima cotton
    .
Pima cotton is a particularly high-quality cotton with long and fine fibers. Textiles made from Pima cotton have a smoother surface and are exceptionally soft.
Shrinkage pretreatment is a mechanical-thermal textile treatment ensures lower shrinkage within fixed tolerances. For example, if the value for non-treated textiles is 18-20%, it is only 6-8% for shrinkage pre-treated textiles.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world’s leading standard for the processing of textiles made from organically produced natural fibers. It defines environmental requirements along the entire textile production chain and social criteria to be met.
Jersey is a fine mesh knitted fabric for outerwear in single or double qualities.
The particularly high-quality material spandex has an extremely high stretch capacity and equally high rebound.
A membrane is a special film that is firmly bonded to the back of an outer fabric. Membranes provide comfort and breathability of functional clothing. They protect against external moisture, but allow water vapor to escape. Compared to conventional coatings, membranes are robust, abrasion-resistant and therefore more durable.
All jackets equipped with a membrane consist of at least two layers of different materials. In 2-layer laminates, the jacket also has a light lining on the inside that prevents direct contact with the membrane. In 2.5-layer laminates, the membrane is protected by another printed coating. In 3-layer laminates, another layer of fabric, for example microfleece or mesh, is applied to the membrane instead of the printed coating. This third layer makes the multi-layer laminate particularly durable and offers a pleasant wearing comfort.
Multi-layer laminates are 100% waterproof if the seams have been treated with an additional tape sealant after fabrication. Without this additional sealing, multilayer laminates are merely water-repellent.
The velvety soft and very dense material made of 100% polyester is extremely light, warming, wind-resistant, elastic and offers a high wearing comfort. Microfleece textiles are very easy to clean.
Environmental standards are taken into account during production and the material is free of harmful substances. For more information, visit https://www.oeko-tex.com.
On-demand production enables the finishing of textiles even in the smallest quantities, from 1 piece, for individual requirements and always at the same price. For you as a customer, this eliminates pre-financing, procurement costs, warehousing costs and there are no remainders.
Piqué is a fabric with alternating raised and recessed areas. It appears like quilted (piqué) and belongs to the double fabrics. Piqué is a classic material for polo shirts.
Fabrics made of polyester are tear-resistant, lightweight and absorb almost no moisture. They also offer a balanced relationship between insulation, moisture transport, tear and abrasion resistance and are therefore currently the most processed fabrics in the field of functional and sports clothing. Since polyester fibers are produced synthetically, there is a wide range of different fibers and thus the right product for every requirement. Thereby the properties are very different and have an impact on the function, the moisture transport and the wearing comfort of the clothing.
Spun-Dyed translates as “spinneret dyeing”. It is a particularly environmentally friendly process. In this process, the color pigments are already added to the fiber during spinning. Compared to conventional dyeing of the finished fabric, this process saves up to 75% water, 67% chemicals and 39% energy. Another advantage is that the pigments are not only located in the outer layer of the fiber, they permeate it completely through to the core. This significantly increases the color fastness.
Softshell is a very popular textile and is the combination of the outer and middle layer of clothing in a single product. The material is smooth, windproof and water repellent on the outside. Inside, it provides a soft surface and comfortable wear. Softshell jackets are elastic and their high freedom of movement makes them ideal as workwear.
The fabrics get more stretch due to the addition of Lycra and this increases the wearing comfort and freedom of movement.
Knitwear is knitted garments, which are thicker, heavier and more insulating compared to woven or knitted fabrics. The production of stitches with the help of a thread or yarn and two or more needles creates an elastic right/left knitted fabric.
A one-sided, usually circular knitted fabric in which a soft lining thread is additionally bound in so that it remains invisible due to a cover thread on the front side. The textiles show right stitches on one fabric side and can be heavily napped on the reverse side. Due to the roughening, clothing made of sweat fabric can tend to “fluff” on the inside, but this stops after the first few washes.
The individualization of textiles, e.g. by embroidery or printing, is called “finishing”. Typical variations are the placement of the logo on the front heart side or on the back.
The textile basis weight is the weight in grams per square meter of a fabric. It forms an important indicator for the quality of textiles, but does not necessarily mean that a higher number of grams is also a better quality.
Thermal transfer printing is a particularly popular printing process for textile promotional materials made of smooth, coarse, uneven materials or promotional textiles with multicolor motifs. In thermal transfer printing, the outstanding, high-resolution print quality of the print motif is applied to the textile using heat, time and pressure. The ink penetrates completely into the fabric and leaves only a barely perceptible ink coating on the textile. Characteristic is the soft, stretchable and durable surface. Thermal transfer printing is ideally suited for both domestic laundry and industrial laundering.
Yes, all textiles are provided with carefully developed care instructions and should also be observed carefully. For example, many textiles are already washable at 30 degrees.
A water column is the unit of measurement for the impermeability of textile fabrics. The water column indicates how much water can weigh on the fabric before it allows moisture to pass through to the inside. One meter of water column corresponds approximately to 0.0098 bar, from 1,300 mm water column clothing may be called waterproof.
Windproof textiles are designed to prevent wind from cooling you down too quickly. The higher the wind speed, the colder the perceived temperature. Thus, for example, an outside temperature of -1 degrees Celsius at a wind speed of 65 km/h is experienced as -21 degrees C. This effect can be prevented by windproof textiles.
With a zip-in system, individually combinable 3-in-1 jackets can be put together. A light, warming softshell jacket or a fleece jacket can thus be combined with a breathable and waterproof jacket. The jackets can have different colors and can be worn separately or together. Their versatility makes them suitable for all uses and demands throughout the year.
In the production of twisted yarns, yarns are finished, which means that at least two or more threads are twisted together.  The number of twists determines the degree of tensile strength and thus increases the durability of the seams.
